Held By Impermanance

In Bombay today, I surprised everyone by dressing up in a shirt. :)  At a very sweetly orchestrated event (including a fancy invite, below!), with about 150 leaders, I shared some stories about service and inner transformation -- and a Boddhisattva approach.

Among the audience, many were very close to Goenka-ji.  For instance, I ran into his personal doctor outside the bathroom. :)  He shared a touching story.  "Few years ago, my wife and I got a call.  Our 27-year-old son was in car accident and passed away.  We were on the road, so we pulled over.  For about five minutes, we were in a state of complete shock.  Neither of us said a word.  Then, we called Goenka-ji.  He assured us that our son had the seed of Dhamma, and that the more balanced we can stay, the more we'll be able to support our son's journey.  With great compassion, he then sang a chant of maitri."

He paused, as if he could still feel the immeasurable debt of gratitude.  We walked back out into the main hall, and his wife also joined the conversation.  Both were long-time meditators.  They concluded the story by saying, "Since that moment, neither my wife or I have shed a single tear.  We feel held by impermanence."
