Conversation With A 7-Year-Old

November 17, 2016

At MS University, we held an Educators panel on "Compassion Quotient".  Meghna totally stole the show with her journey of home-schooling her daughter (video coming soon! :)).  I opened with a story that Guri shares so beautifully, about her niece's innate propensity to want to serve others …

G: Mili, so what do you think you want to be when you grow up?
M: Masi, actually I need your help. Can you help me decide? I'm not sure if I want to a veterinarian or a people doctor.
G: Oh yeah?
M: One is easy and the other is hard. Being people doctor is easy because people are something you know -- and all are the same. To be a veterinarian, you have so many different animals.
M: What do you think I should do?
G: It's really up to you. Both are good. I think people can be complicated too... with so many different illnesses and diseases.
M: Really? What is more helpful?
G: What do you like more?
M: I want to do what is more helpful. Just tell me what's more helpful.
G: You have to figure it out and decide. They're both good.
M: I don't know. Maybe I should be an artist. Masi, will you tell me what I'm supposed to do.
Hinde: You should be a Chef so you can cook for dad and me. :-)
M: No way. I will just be cooking and then you will just get fat. And that doesn't help anyone.  Masi, what do you think I should do?
G: Mili you're only in second grade so I think you have some time to figure it out. :-) Just keep trying different things you like and work hard at them. You'll figure it out.
M: But I don't even know what's more helpful.
G: It's okay you'll figure it out. :-)
