Hidden Hearts

Jul 29, 2005

Walking by wide grayblue waters just before sunset. Surrounded by the glowing colors of flowers set like bright jewels in emerald leaf casings. I look down as I walk, filled with slow-welling gratitude for all the unsought, unasked for loveliness that falls within the frame of my life, and watchful of the small black ants. Amused at the urgency of their untold agendas, wondering whether we too with ours, from a different vantage point, look much the same. (I think we probably do :-)) Happy gaze catches on a wild patch of verbena. Growing in a tangled carpet of green patterned with scattered clusters of purple and white flowers. Such rampant cheerfulness that I stop to take a picture. And as I look through the lens the astonishing outline of a heart-in-blossom emerges. But- how had I missed it before? I lift my eye from the camera. Again I see only a tangled green carpet, crazily strewn with small blooms. The clear heart is lost in the uncontrolled traffic of its surroundings. But when I look back through the lens it leaps out again. Such quiet grace- and a wordless reassurance: Still Here it seems to say. Still Here.

A Purple Reminder, perhaps- to remember as I walk the green tangled carpet of this world- the eternal Hidden Heart of things.
